Saving Grace

What does it take to save an old house?
It takes a little bit of everything.
When the Land Bank became the owner of 624 West Delaware in the Old West End neighborhood in Toledo, its many charms were hidden beneath peeling paint, rotting wood, and years of neglect. Without a partner to invest their money, time, and heart into the project, the Land Bank feared demolition would be the only result.
Not an easy place to be in a historic neighborhood. But the Old West End is not your typical place.
After honest conversations, the Land Bank and the Old West End Association challenged each other to think differently about this Spanish-style historic home. The Land Bank listened to those who did not want to lose yet another home. And the Old West End Association was reminded of the old adage: "If I am not for myself, who will be for me?"
The Land Bank donated the money that would have been used to tear down the house, and the Association agreed to match it - and more.
Today, this beautiful old house is on the preservation path! With partners in and out of the neighborhood and regular workdays where volunteers get their hands dirty and their paintbrushes wet, 624 West Delaware is coming back to life.
In October, Toledo City Council and Council Member Mac Driscoll, an Old West End resident, celebrated this one-of-a-kind effort with a resolution recognizing the Old West End Association's efforts.
"It's going to make somebody an awesome house," said one of the project leads, Michael Walker.
That's its saving grace.
